Hold Open Devices and Electromagnetic Locking Devices

This short seminar addresses the requirements of Building Code Articles 3.1.8.12 (Hold Open Devices), 3.4.6.15 (Door Release Hardware) and 3.4.6.16 (Security for Banks and Mercantile Floor Areas). Participants will learn to apply the requirements of the code applicable to the installation of magnetic hold open devices on doors within fire separations and electromagnetic locking devices in various occupancies and situations.

Egress From Dwelling Units

This one hour presentation on Egress From Dwelling Units identifies a complex series of building code requirements, including: the incorporation of grade in relation to building height, single and multi-storey dwelling units and balcony design.

Requirements Applicable to High Buildings

The High Buildings presentation addresses the fundamentals of high building design. Smoke movement measures within buildings and the fire safety features required by the building code to protect occupants will be discussed. The seminar presents a thorough analysis of Subsection 3.2.6 and Appendix B of the Alberta Building Code and SB-4 of the Ontario Building Code.

Barrier-Free Accessibility Requirements

This seminar will give participants a clear knowledge of the application of barrier-free accessibility requirements. Topics to be discussed include design standards for ramps, corridors and washrooms, as well as the application of barrier-free residential suites. The seminar also includes an interactive discussion as to when good practice design comes into play. Participants will gain a better understanding as to how to apply the barrier-free Ontario Building Code requirements.

When to Hire a Code Consultant & Basics for Interior Designers

This one hour tech session will leave participants with a clear picture of Ontario Building Code requirements that interior designers deal with on a day-to-day basis.  This includes topics such as travel distance, means of egress and barrier-free accessibility, focusing particularly on commercial, retail and assembly occupancies.  The seminar will conclude with some pointers on when to call for the help of a code consultant, and areas in which we can assist to produce a code-compliant design.


Code Basics for Hospitality and Retail Design

This one hour tech session will leave participants with an in-depth knowledge of interior design requirements that pertain to hospitality and retail design. Topics discussed in this presentation include:

  • Key Code Definitions,
  • People Movement,
  • Compartmentation,
  • Washrooms, and
  • Interior Finishes and Flame-Spread Ratings.

Participants will have a better grasp on how to apply code requirements specifically for hospitality occupancies, including hotels and restaurants, as well as retail occupancies.

Interconnected Floor Spaces

Interconnected Floor Spaces is an intermediate level seminar addressing the Building Code requirements applicable to openings through floor assemblies including mezzanines and multiple storey atria. The seminar discusses the architectural and mechanical requirements applicable to interconnected floor space designs. The lecture material is supplemented with a workshop session.

A prerequisite is a good working knowledge of the Building Code.

Spatial Separation and Exposure Protection

Spatial Separation and Exposure Protection is an intermediate level seminar presenting a thorough discussion of the fundamentals, background, and application of Building Code Subsection 3.2.3. Detailed discussions and examples identify the manner in which exposure calculations are to be performed and resultant determination of permitted unprotected openings and exterior wall fire-resistance ratings and construction. The lecture material is supplemented with workshop sessions.

A prerequisite is a good working knowledge of the Building Code.
